Happy 1st of September!

I think September is an underrated month.  I for one, love it.  It’s still warm enough for possible beach weather but also the brink of scarf season!  If you know me, you are probably shaking your head or rolling your eyes at my scarf obsession.

This September has a lot of exciting things in it!

  • My Name Day – Today is my Name Day!  Name Days are a much-anticipated event each year for members of the Greek Orthodox faith.  In Greece, a Name Day is actually considered more important than a birthday.  What happens is that most people born into Greek Orthodox families will be given a name that coincides with the name of an officially recognized saint in the Greek Orthodox Church.  The Name Day is then celebrated on that patron saint’s day every year.  Where my family just honors a Name Day with a verbal acknowledgment, several families do actually celebrate with gifts and parties.  What I never understood is how my patron saint is Saint Simeon??  Oh well.  My date of September 1st is easy to remember since it’s the day right after my birthday.
  • 5th Annual Girls “No Carb Left Behind” Cape Weekend – An annual summer tradition with my college girlfriends (and now Katrina too) that originated during our senior week in 2007.  We stay the weekend at my uncle’s Cape house and spend the time eating, drinking, eating again, going to the beach, eating some more, and then eating even more.  We already have the food list going around and this year is our 5th year anniversary so we are going to try and make t-shirts.  There probably won’t be many healthy food pictures that weekend – just a forewarning!
  • Kerri’s Wedding – My friend Kerri from work is tying the knot!  I am looking forward to her wedding – it is going to be very fun and with a different spin too.  The invitation, like many others, listed out the times for the church ceremony, reception, etc.  The last item on there was “9:30 – depart to campfire.”  I think we all get to hang out by a campfire at the end of the night and everyone brings their own blanket or beach chair.  Love this idea.
  • Washington DC trip  - Erin and I booked a long weekend to visit our friend Meg!  So excited!  Much needed reunion for the three of us.

Fitness related… September is also National Yoga Month, so grab your yoga mats!

The month is “designed to build awareness of yoga’s proven health benefits and provide people with actionable guidance and tools to enhance their own well-being.  This grassroots awareness campaign inspires both youths and adults to take responsibility for their well-being by focusing on prevention and healthy lifestyle choices.”

I love this.

Definitely check out the link because with Yoga Month you could get a free week of yoga!  Participating studios across the whole country are offering a one week free yoga new student program to introduce yoga and its proven health benefits to those new to the practice.

There’s also a global event being held on September 30th in honor of Yoga Month called The Time for Yoga.  “At 7 p.m. local time on September 30, yoga students of all experience levels are encouraged to practice yoga as an international observance and the culmination of Yoga Month.  A one-hour yoga practice will be followed by savasana beginning at 8 p.m., and a 15 minute meditation for universal peace and well-being at 8:15 p.m.  By participating during your own local time, a wave of yoga will take place around the globe.”

There’s also a Yoga Month blog for your reading pleasures!

Question of the Day:  What are you looking forward to in the month of September?

Namaste!

  1. Hahaha, I remember when I bought my Burberry scarf for some obscene price and your biggest reason why I shouldn’t was “but you could buy FIFTY scarves from Old Navy for that price!”

  2. Football!

Also, although I’m not quite ready for the woolen scarves, in Atlanta September finally brings a break to the oppresive heat. Here that means I’m only 60 days away from breaking out my extensive collection of neck apparel. :)

I'd love to hear from you! Leave a comment.
